Opening Spring 2026 in the Hadley Family Recreation & Well-Being Center, the Adventure Leadership Climbing Center will be the University of Michigan’s newest hub for vertical adventure. The new center will feature towering rope walls, a full bouldering area and collegiate-standard speed wall. We have designed this space for the entire campus community to climb, discover and connect.

Climbing is Accessible and Inspirational

Whether you are a beginner just finding your footing or a seasoned climber, we are here to help you on your well-being journey to climb higher—physically and mentally, together.

Designed to Help You Reach Higher

Whatever level you want to reach, we’ll get you there! Challenge yourself to a climb on the 52-foot rope walls for top rope, speed and lead climbing or try the 18-foot bouldering area. If speed is your passion, the official 15 meter 2-lane speed wall for head-to-head races is where you want to be.

Route Walls

Our rope walls deliver big adventures indoors — from the 28-foot teaching wall built for new climbers to the 52-foot main wall that dominates the facility. With 35–40 routes set across slabs, vertical faces, and steep overhangs, there’s always something new to try.
Whether you’re learning to belay, pushing into lead climbing, or chasing that next send, these walls are where skills and confidence grow.

Bouldering Walls

Standing 16 feet tall with 2,116 square feet of climbing surface, our bouldering zone is the heart of Hadley. The terrain ranges from balance-based slabs to a 36-degree overhang built for powerful moves.
With 35–40 problems rotated in every few weeks, every visit feels like a fresh challenge. No ropes needed — just shoes, chalk, and plenty of energy.

Speed Wall

Our 15-meter, dual-lane speed wall brings competition-style climbing to campus. Built to IFSC geometry specs, it’s perfect for friendly races, training sessions, or testing your limits.
The custom Michigan Blue holds give the wall its signature look — a nod to campus pride and the adrenaline rush that comes with racing to the top.

Crack Climbing

Two custom fiberglass cracks — one stretching 52 feet and another on the 28-foot teaching wall — are seamlessly built into the walls for a realistic, natural-rock feel.
Both are hand-crack width, perfect for learning jam technique or refining your skills before heading outdoors. Few university walls in the country offer anything like it — and you can climb it right here at Michigan.

Bouldering Introduction Experience

As we begin operations in the Climbing Center, access will be restricted to the Bouldering Introduction Experience ONLY. Our immediate priority is to safely and intentionally introduce Hadley Center users to the Climbing Center space before any additional climbing activities are considered.

For those that are new to climbing or just want to get to know the new Climbing Center, join us for this unique offering that will introduce you to the new Hadley Climbing Center. The sessions are guided 1.5-hour experiences that take participants on a facility tour, sharing safety expectations, proper equipment usage, and supervised bouldering time.

This offering requires pre-registration. Spaces are limited for these sessions so register soon by stopping by the Hadley Family Recreation & Well-Being Center front desk.
